It is no secret that our individual productivity is greatly
hinged on our self-esteem and confidence. If you don't believe in yourself and
your ability, it will no doubt significantly affect what you can achieve. Self-esteem
can be said to simply mean the perception we have of ourselves. Unfortunately,
a lot of people tend to underestimate their own worth most of the time, hence
feeling bad about themselves.
Numerous people tend not to feel good about themselves for
different reasons. Sometimes it can be a result of overthinking or comparing
themselves to others. Other times, it can be because of an inability to forgive
themselves for past poor decisions, focusing more on their weaknesses than
strengths, or mental health issues, among other reasons.
Perhaps, you are in search of ways to feel better about
yourself. Here is a list of five things you can do if you are not feeling good
about yourself:
1. Acknowledge your previous accomplishments.
When it comes to feeling better about yourself, reminiscing
about your past achievements is undoubtedly your best bet. Make a list of your
past achievements and use them to motivate yourself whenever you are feeling
down. It can be getting over a heartbreak, a good grade you got on an
examination, a valuable skill you learned, a home you bought, or anything at
all. It doesn't matter what it is. Be proud of what you have been able to
achieve in the past. When you look at your list of past achievements whenever
you are not feeling good about yourself, it can remind you of the great things
you have accomplished and give you incentive and inspiration for your new goals,
and that can lift your mood.
One common error some people may make is trying to compare their
achievements to those of others. In doing so, they may fail to realize that
we're all unique individuals and that our achievements are personalized to us. Do
not let anyone talk you down about your achievements, and even if they do, don't
let it get to or discourage you.
2. Be Intentional About Your Relationships.
If you must work on your self-esteem and confidence in your
ability, the kind of relationships you keep isn't something that should be
ignored. Some people may begin to feel bad about themselves because of remarks or
criticism about their looks or personalities made by someone they hold in high
regard. If you must win the war against low self-esteem and begin to feel
better about yourself, you must be intentional about the relationships you entertain
or maintain. Protect your mental health at all costs by keeping only quality
people around you who support and uplift you and can give you honest and
constructive feedback.
Are those around you seeing your value? Are they talking
down on your worth in the name of jokes or whatever? Do you feel belittled or oppressed
by them in any way? Do they intentionally disregard you? These are some of the
questions you need to answer about your relationships. If you must overcome
feeling bad about yourself, cutting off toxic people is not negotiable. You
don't have to think twice before keeping people who make you feel less of a
human at arm's length if you must begin to feel better about yourself. Do away
with people who make it look like you're always the problem when it’s them who
constantly causes issues. Surround yourself with people who encourage and help
you in whichever way they can for you to become a better individual every day
and not otherwise. It is better to be alone than in the wrong company. You
should make sure your relationships are contributing to your growth in one way
or the other.

3. Prioritize personal development.
Another thing you can do if you're not feeling good about
yourself is to prioritize your personal development. Investing in oneself and
others can boost one's self-esteem in no small measure. Look for ways to
empower and motivate yourself, and you'll start feeling better in no time.
And the good news is: One doesn't even have to break a
sweat or the bank before personally developing oneself these days. Many thanks
to the advancement in technology. There are tons of resources available on the Internet,
all for free, that are helpful in learning about and improving oneself. You can
read good books, take courses, learn skills, or even volunteer in
organizations. All these activities will go a long way toward helping you feel
good about yourself.

4. Exercise and eat healthily.
The importance of exercise and healthy foods in our lives
cannot be overemphasized. Aside from the health benefits that accompany
engaging in exercise, it is a medical fact that exercise helps boost our mood.
Exercise also helps in developing our muscles and keeping us physically fit.
This has a great positive impact on our confidence. So, next time you are
looking for things you can do to feel better about yourself, hit the gym and
you may be glad you did. Junk foods may make you feel like junk. So, be sure
to be mindful of what you put into your body. A healthy body can make you feel
good physically and mentally.

5. Practice self-love.
Perhaps you don't know yet, but there's no one who would be
able to love you like you. Many people tend to think and feel bad about
themselves because they don't love themselves as they should. A great way to
feel better about yourself is to practice self-love. All this time, you may have
been showing people love and showering them with gifts. Now, it is your turn.
Are you feeling bad about yourself, and you are confused about what to do? You
should love yourself more than you ever have. This is the time to be more attentive
to your needs and wants, learn to speak, stand up for yourself assertively
and respectfully, or go on that vacation you have been postponing. Take
that break you have been craving. Quit that toxic job you have been hesitant to
quit after landing another one. You can take yourself out to eat too or change
that wardrobe you have always wanted to.
When it comes to ways you can feel better about yourself,
engaging in self-love and becoming comfortable in your own essence are no doubt
masterstrokes. You may not be doing as badly as you think if you are able to
see and map out your next three power plays for personal growth and development.
As a matter of fact, you may be surprised to discover that
you have what it takes to keep pushing forward despite having one or two bad
days. Give yourself some accolades for how far you've come. Love yourself more,
believe you can acquire the skills to achieve your goals, jot down your next
three strategic moves (with some help or guidance), and you can see your
self-esteem and confidence at their peak.
